Welcome
to the Johannes-Brahms-Gesellschaft and the Johannes-Brahms-Museum.
The opening of the Johannes-Brahms-Museum took place on 26th August 1971
with the active participation and support of the friends of music in Hamburg.
The renovated Baroque house of the 18th century proved to be chosen
very happily because it reflects the old Hamburg so that a lot of visitors
have asked whether Johannes Brahms lived here or was born in it. But his birthplace in the Speckstraße nearby was destroyed in World War II in 1943. Only a commemorative stone reminds the visitor there of the great son of the city.
In the museum which is run by the Johannes-Brahms-Gesellschaft
and whose rooms have kindly put at disposal by the Carl Toepfer Stiftung
Brahmsiana, documents, facsimiles, pieces of music, photographs, concert
programmes and busts of Brahms are shown.
Furthermore, the museum has a library with about 600 books,
all the compositions of Johannes Brahms on CD-´s and the volumes
of the latest complete edition of Brahms`works.

We are
mourning for Detlef Kraus. The Johannes Brahms Gesellschaft mourns Detlef Kraus, who passed away in Hamburg on 7 January 2008 at the age of 88. Detlef Kraus was the President of our Association from 1982 until 1997, and brought about an enhancement of its image and prestige. He was highly esteemed as a pianist of international standing, and in particular as an interpreter of Brahms. As a professor for piano at the Folkwang Institute in Essen from 1963 until 1988, he influenced generations of young artists. With him, we have lost a great personality, an example, a friend. He shall remain present in our hearts.
